2007

In September 2007, questions were submitted by fans across the globe as part of a contest on this site. Below are the questions that were asked and Caterina's responses.

1) Do you ever wish that Missing had lasted more than three seasons?

When the show first ended I think everybody was in some degree of shock. The network had just changed hands so we knew that some pretty major shifts would be happening. However, we had been assured that, because of its popularity, "Missing" would stay in the line-up in order to bridge the transition to the new face of Lifetime. At the 11th hour it was decided that, in fact, the new executives wanted to bring in entirely new programming to herald the changes at the network and "Missing" was not renewed.

It's always hard to say goodbye to everybody when a project ends. You really become like a tight, wacky, over-tired but loving family when you work like that for so long. But everyone has gone on to do such great things professionally as well as personally that I think it's clear that the show coming to an end was what was supposed to happen. I totally trust that we're all exactly where we're supposed to be.

2) What is your best movie and who is your favourite actor?

I have so many favorite movies! I don't know where to begin. Some of them include The Constant Gardner, True Romance, Closer, The Decologue, The Princess Bride, Labrynth, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...etc. etc.

Likewise there are so many actors and actresses that I admire. Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weiss, Kate Winslet are among my favorite female actors. Clive Owen, Daniel Day Lewis, Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins are some of my favorite male actors... All of this stuff is constantly shifting and changing... so ask me again some time.

3) If your next project could be filming anywhere, where would you like it to be? Why?

hmmm... I love travelling so much. Really, I'd love to shoot in anyplace I haven't yet been to (and in some places I've already visited). This world is so fantastically interesting. I am totally humbled and invigorated everytime I go somewhere new and see all of the beautiful variation in the world.

4) Are you interested in directing?

At this point I'm not terribly interested in directing. While I would like to participate in the larger vision of a project, the technical aspects of direction (like deciding where the camera goes and what the edit is going to do and whether it will be shot on steadycam or handheld) doesn't appeal to me. This is a pretty huge part of what you would do as a director and while am completely in awe of those who know whether or not we've "crossed the access on the turn around" I just ain't one of those people.

Writing, acting and producing all seem like more natural arenas for me... as of now... but the world is a miraculous place.

5) Which actors have you enjoyed working with?

Again, I've been blessed to work with so many gifted and dedicated artists. Each of has contributed to my formation as an actor. If I had to name two that stick out... I'd say Ed Harris, for being... a complete genius and a totally humble, real guy. And Michael Riley for modeling an incredible work ethic and a deep respect for acting.

6) Are you still friends with people from other projects?

It's very hard to keep in contact with many of the people you work with. Busy schedules and far away locations make staying close really challenging. But, yes, some of my closest friends are people I've worked with in the past. We just have to work doubly hard to bridge the distance.

7) If you were to give interested fans any advice about becoming an actor you would say?

Make sure that your focus is not SOLELY on being an actor. The job of an actor is to take a character off a page and breathe life into them. The characters we play must have all of the colors, dynamism and interior life of a 'real' person. In order to give this to a character we have to spend time developing our OWN character through books, adventures, experience, compassion for and curiosity about people and excitement about the world.

If we don't take the time to do this, when they yell "action" there won't be anything inside of us to use in order to flesh out the character we've been hired to play. It will just be a sketch of what we "think" a person of this "type" would be like.

Anything you can do to develop as a person, to grow your heart and your ability to understand and love people (including yourself) will serve you when it comes time to step inside a character and make them live.
